Pallor describes paleness of the skin and mucous membranes. It may be a result of reduced blood flow, abnormal pigmentation or anaemia.

Pallor is best assessed by examining the conjunctivae and mucous membranes. It is a poor index of the extent of anaemia.

Pallor due to abnormal pigmentation may be considered in terms of:

  • generalized hypomelanosis
  • white patches on the skin, or leukoderma
