Statin and fibrate combination therapy

Last reviewed dd mmm yyyy. Last edited dd mmm yyyy

Authoring team

  • for most people with both elevated cholesterol and triglycerides, treatment should still commence with a statin
  • if persistent hypertriglyceridaemia is present after LDL targets are achieved, a combination of a statin with a fibrate (using fenofibrate, bezafibrate, or ciprofibrate) can be considered on specialist advice

Notes:

  • gemfibrozil should not be used in combination with a statin
  • if a statin–fibrate combination is used, then monitoring of CK and ALT is appropriate
