The clinical diagnosis of chickenpox is generally quite straightforward.

However in if clinical diagnosis of chickenpox is in doubt then the conditions in the differential diagnosis include:

  • herpes simplex
  • disseminated herpes zoster
  • impetigo
  • drug related eruptions
  • contact dermatitis
  • erythema multiforme
  • Stevens Johnson syndrome
  • hand, foot and mouth disease
  • scabies
  • disseminated molluscum contagiosum
