Possible complications features of non-physiological jaundice include:

  • kernicterus, with subsequent choreathetosis evolving in the second year of life

The following are part of the clinical picture of kernicterus, but merit separate consideration:

  • opisthotonus
  • spasticity
  • convulsions
  • mental retardation
  • deafness
