Congenital malformations or anomalies in the production of limbs are usually the result of agents acting during the fourth to seventh weeks of pregnancy. The aetiology is largely unknown but a number of potential causes may result in a similar phenotype.

Major limb malformations are found in 2 in every 1000 neonates. They may be considered in terms of site of malformation.
