Prophylactic and therapeutic use of acyclovir is effective against herpes simplex and herpes zoster.

Cytomegalovirus however remains difficult to treat though the following agents are used:

  • phosphonoformate / foscarnet
  • ganciclovir
  • hyper-immune CMV globulin
