Protein malnutrition

In this condition, malnutrition is associated with oedema and loss of appetite. The condition commonly occurs in children 18 to 24 months old at the time of weaning.

In this condition the energy intake may be adequate but there is insufficient protein intake for growth. Thus, there is muscle wasting of the infant but preservation of some subcutaneous fat.
