Diastematomyelia is a congenital splitting of part of the spinal cord, usually at the level of the upper lumbar vertebra. It is associated with a bony, fibrous or cartilaginous spur which often extends across the spinal canal in an antero-posterior direction. When the split does not reunite distal to the spur, the condition is referred to as a diplomyelia.
