Acute disease - with nifurtimox or benzidiazole. However these drugs achieve parasitologic cures in only about 50% of treated patients and both drugs cause significant toxicity.

Chronic disease is treated symptomatically. There is no evidence that drug treatment alters the natural course of the disease.
