The glossopharyngeal nerve supplies:

  • the sensory component to the posterior 1/3 of the tongue, the pharynx and the middle ear
  • the taste fibres for the posterior 1/3 of the tongue
  • the motor supply to the middle constrictor of the pharynx and the stylopharyngeus
