The BMR may be estimated: formulations such as the Harris-Benedict equation are tabulated in the submenu. More accurately, BMR may be measured clinically:

  • direct calorimetery: the subject sits in a respiratory chamber and the amount of heat produced is measured
  • indirect calorimetry: based on the respiratory quotient; a more practical means of assessing energy requirements
