In divorce and separation of parents there is clearly a separation of a child from one parent at any one time. Despite studies which have attempted to show that parents should stay together at all costs, or that some factor is more important than another, in the end it is the quality of the relationship between the parents and children that is the single most important factor.

However, 30% of children caught up in severe ongoing marital disharmony have conduct disorders. There is:

  • the need for warmth
  • the need to learn coping mechanisms
  • a conflict of loyalties
