Dipping describes a method of examining for abdominal masses in the presence of gross ascites. With the hand placed flat on the abdomen, flex the fingers at the metacarpophalangeal joints so as to displace the underlying fluid that covers the mass.
With this degree of ascites, the liver and spleen may be ballottable.
