In type II diabetes:

  • measure urinary albumin:creatinine ratio or albumin concentration annually
  • measure serum creatinine annually
  • classify albumin excretion annually as:
    • lower risk (absence of microalbuminuria or proteinuria), or
    • higher risk
      • microalbuminuria - albumin:creatinine ratio >= 2.5mg/mmol (men) or 3.5 mg/mmol (women), or albumin concentration >= 20mg/l and/or
      • proteinuria - albumin:creatinine ratio >= 30 mg/mmol or albumin concentration >= 200mg/ml
