Authoring team

Patients considering a PSA test should be informed that at present:

  • early detection and treatment of prostate cancer may be beneficial
  • identifying men at greatest risk of prostate cancer or identifying which patients will benefit from further investigations and treatment is indecisive
  • no strong evidence to indicate which treatment option is most suitable for which man;
  • active treatments have significant side-effects, although improvements to treatment regimes and their side-effects are being made (1)

The management of prostatic carcinoma depends on the disease stage:

  • organ-confined
  • locally advanced
  • advanced, metastatic
