Pulmonary fibrosis may be classified into focal and interstitial fibrosis. The most common cause of focal fibrosis is occupational lung diease. The commonest causes of interstitial fibrosis are fibrosing alveolitits (either idiopathic or related to connective tissue disorders) and extrinsice allergic alveolitis.

Pulmonary fibrosis may also occur secondary to damage caused by other disorders eg infarction, tuberculosis and pneumonia.
