The aetiology of this condition is unknown.

There is evidence that Kawasaki disease has an infectious aetiology:

  • a retrovirus has been proposed
  • recent evidence points to the role of toxin-producing staphylococci or streptococci; specifically, superantigens similar to the toxic shock syndrome toxin may be important
