Hand-grip dynanometry is a standardized, simple and quick means of assessing nutrition in relation to skeletal muscle function. The patient is asked to grip a device quantified to force in newtons as tightly as possible.

The patient must be motivated to grip as tightly as possible. The test is not valid in the presence of neuromuscular junction, muscle or joint disease.

The trend in values is more instructive than individual readings.
