The metabolite of pethidine, norpethedine is very toxic, and after about four doses serum levels may achieve those associated with symptoms of hallucinogenesis and convulsions, especially in patients with impaired renal function.
MAOIs and pethidine should not be prescribed together as episodes of excitement, hyperthermia and convulsions have been reported.
