Sensory ataxia

Proprioceptive information is an important input into the cerebellum. It is no surprise that disruption of the sensory system results in ataxia. Sensory ataxia may resemble cerebellar malfunction. Typically there is a stamping gait.

The sense of touch is also important in the following movements:

  • fine manipulations with the hands
  • walking and standing

Sensory ataxia may be partially compensated for by visual surveillance. For this reason the patient will complain that inco-ordination is worse in the dark or when the eyes are covered e.g. dressing.
