The principal differential diagnosis of ARF is dehydration which is suggested by:

  • normal sized kidneys
  • urine sodium concentration < 20 mM
  • urine osmolality / plasma osmolality > 1.5

Dehydration is corrected by the administration of oral or intravenous fluids.
