The term placenta weighs around 600 g, roughly a sixth the weight of the baby.

The postmature placenta has a more gritty texture due to small areas of infarction and calcification. This will occur earlier in association with some diseases, for example pre-eclampsia and diabetes, also in some self inflicted circumstances such as smoking in pregnancy.
