The ingestion of foreign bodies is most common in three groups:

  • children aged 1-5 years
  • patients with psychiatric disease
  • prisoners

The vast majority of foreign bodies pass through the gastrointestinal tract without causing symptoms. In the remainder, the complications can be serious, even fatal.
