Coenzyme A is a coenzyme consisting of:

  • adenosine-3,5-biphosphate
  • phosphate
  • pantothenic acid
  • a terminal thioethanolamine group

The terminal group is important as an acceptor and donator of acyl groups. The prime example is acetyl coenzyme A, an intermediate in a number of key pathways.
