Tertiary hyperparathyroidism describes a condition in which autonomous parathyroid activity and hypercalcaemia occur following prolonged secondary hyperparathyroidism.
The set point at which serum calcium shuts off PTH production is raised. It is most commonly seen in patients undergoing maintenance renal dialysis. Tertiary hyperparathyroidism may also occur in patients with long standing malabsorption or chronic renal failure.
