Contraindications

Authoring team

Contraindications for a ventouse delivery include:

  • a breech or face presentation
  • urgent foetal distress (a forceps delivery is quicker)
  • preterm foetus (intracranial haemorrhage may be less with forceps)

Haematomata, intracranial haemorrhage and scalp necrosis have all been reported on rare occasions. Usually the vacuum was applied for too long or there was excessive traction.
