The aetiology may be congenital or acquired, thus:

  • Down's syndrome
  • congenital rubella syndrome

In some other conditions, maintenance of the VSD is essential for survival:

  • double outlet right ventricle
  • transposition of the great arteries

It may also occur as complication of myocardial infarction or trauma.
