The glossopharyngeal has both motor, parasympathetic and sensory components.

The motor component supplies the stylopharyngeus and superior constrictor muscles. The parasympathetic division supplies the parotid salivary glands. The sensory component complexly innervates:

  • pressure receptors in the carotid sinus
  • chemoreceptors in the carotid body
  • the touch receptors lining the palate, tonsils, pharynx, auditory tube and tympanic cavity
  • the taste receptors on the posterior of the tongue
  • sensation from the external ear and auditory meatus
