Exclude other causes of thrombocytopenia:

  • bone marrow disorders - usually have particular marrow features
  • non-marrow causes - usually have systemic illness

Check drug usage including heparin in hospitalised patients.

Check for co-existing systemic lupus erythematous or chronic lymphocytic leukaemia.
