Fasciculation may be a feature of:

  • motor neurone disease
  • poliomyelitis
  • motor root compression, for example cervical spondylosis
  • any motor neuropathy, for example caused by malignancy
  • acquired myopathies, for example thyrotoxicosis, polymyositis
  • electrolyte disturbance such as hyponatraemia or hypomagnesaemia; hypocalcaemia or hypokalaemia may cause cramps or tetany
  • benign fasciculation, for example myokymia
  • drugs, such as anticholinesterases or lithium
