Investigations include:

  • faecal culture and parasite screen: will identify many organisms. Note that a jejunal biopsy may be required to identify Giardia.
  • methylene blue staining: will identify numerous WBCs in the faeces. This is suggestive of colonic irritation of an infective or an inflammatory nature.
  • sigmoidoscopy
  • specific serological tests: available with Salmonella, Campylobacter, Yersinia and E. histolytica
