Multiple pregnancy is not an uncommon event (twins 1/105 pregnancies, triplets 1/10,000 pregnancies). It is important to be aware of the possible additional hazards of more than one fetus in the uterus in order to pre-empt some serious pathology.

The incidence of multiple pregnancies varies between populations e.g. there is a lower incidence in women of Chinese origin and a higher incidence in Nigerian women.
