The most frequent cause of tricuspid incompetence is when it occurs secondary to right ventricular failure.

Other causes of this condition are very rare.

Consider surgical tricuspid valve repair at the time of mitral valve surgery when tricuspid regurgitation is moderate or severe* (1)

Consider surgical tricuspid valve repair at the time of aortic valve surgery when tricuspid regurgitation is severe *(1)

* severity of valve disease is defined in line with the British Society of Echocardiography guidelines on the British Heart Foundation's website
