The conducting system components propagate the wave of excitation that governs the normal sequence and speed of contraction of the heart. They are specialised cardiac myocytes and not neurones. The circuit is sequentially:

  • sinuatrial node
  • atrial myocytes or specialised interatrial conduction pathways
  • atrioventricular node
  • atrioventricular bundle
  • bundle branches
  • Purkinje fibres
