Cystitis is a term used by doctor and patient.

To the doctor it means a burning discomfort worse on passing urine (dysuria) as a result of inflammation of the bladder. There is an increased frequency of micturation.

Patients may be misinformed, and so by open ended questions it is wise to check what the patient means by "cystitis"- sometimes the patient means frequency of urine without dysuria.

Other features include:

  • abrupt onset
  • cloudy, smelly urine
  • frequency
  • pain in the suprapubic region or lower back
  • suprapubic tenderness on examination
