Eosinophils have the following microscopic and ultrastructural features:

  • 10-14 micrometers in diameter
  • bilobed nucleus with chromatin dispersion similar to neutrophils: heterochromatin peripherally, euchromatin centrally
  • numerous eosinophilic granules within the cytoplasm:
    • these are large - 1 micrometer - lysosomes
    • they are concentrated in cytoplasm; little room for other organelles
    • contain the enzymes histaminase, arylsuphatase, peroxidase and phospholipase
