This is an area of dermatitis following hypostasis i.e. poor tissue perfusion. It occurs on the lower legs in association with venous insufficiency due to incompetent valves or following phlebitis.

It precedes ulceration and is often is associated with epidermal atrophy, purpura and hyperpigmentation.
