Once the posterior wall of the inguinal canal has been repaired, the cord is replaced. Then, the external oblique aponeurosis must be repaired. A 'double-breasting' technique can be used in a similar manner to the repair of both transversalis fascia and conjoint tendon - see submenu.

The subcutaneous fat is sutured with a loose, interrupted absorbable stitch. This obliterates the dead space but does not strangulate fat.

Finally, the skin incision is repaired. Continuous or interrupted sutures, tape and skin clips have all been used for this purpose.
