Oestrogens are used for:

  • contraception in women
  • replacement:
    • hypo-ovarian conditions
    • menopausal or post-menopausal symptoms
  • menstrual disorders
  • acne
  • treatment of cancer:
    • prostatic - acting as an anti-androgen
    • breast; the use of tamoxifen as an anti-oestrogen
  • treatment of infertility: clomiphene interferes with the normal central feedback mechanism of oestrogens, so inducing ovulation
