Fatty acids are synthesized in the cytoplasm of cells from acetyl-CoA. A multi-enzyme complex combines activated acetyl residues with the growing fatty acid chain. The reaction is dependent on energy in the form of ATP and NADPH.

Man has lost the ability to synthesize the essential fatty acids.
