Many of the aetiological factors implicated in cerebral palsy are of increased likelihood in preterm or small for dates infants.

The absolute figures vary with time, but there is said to be at least a tenfold increase in risk for children under 1.5 kg at birth; a similar risk is associated with preterm delivery.
