Authoring team

Prostaglandins are 20-carbon unsaturated fatty acids containing a cyclopentane ring. They play a role in platelet aggregation and local vasoconstriction. Chemically, prostacyclin is related closely to the prostaglandins but has a different spectrum of activity. Both prostaglandins and prostacyclin are members of the prostanoid group.

The prostaglandins include:

  • prostaglandin E1
  • prostaglandin E2
  • prostaglandin F2 alpha
