Birth asphyxia may be the result of intrauterine asphyxia, occurring at 1 to 2 per 1000 deliveries.

A recent move has renamed the condition hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy, which gives better information about what to expect, and which is a less emotionally loaded term in an era of high litigation.
