Presentation is with babies developing respiratory distress shortly after birth.

The features are very non specific, and precise symptoms should not be sought. However, generalised features may include the following:

  • early symptoms include lethargy, apnoea, bradycardia, and poor feeding - there may be temperature instability
  • on examination, there may be diminished air entry over areas of consolidation or effusion. There may be fine crepitations heard on inspiration in some cases.
