This condition is usually well tolerated unless acute (infective endocarditis), or severe. Patients who are asymptomatic but have a triad of low diastolic pressure, left ventricular hypertrophy on the ECG and marked dilatation on the chest X-ray and echocardiography (more than 5cm in systole) are likely to deteriorate with irreversible damage to the left ventricle.
