The clinical features of neuralgic amyotrophy are:
the patient usually complains of the sudden onset of an intense pain in the shoulder and arm followed in a few days by muscular weakness and wasting
weakness is usually proximal but may affect the entire arm
occasionally, both arms are affected simultaneously
sensory features are less apparent and occur in 50% of cases - sensation tends to be lost over the outer aspect of the shoulder, usually follows the pain, and may occur without subsequent wasting
