Risk factors for neonatal infection are similar regardless of the infection, although there are some factors specific to particular infection. They include:

  • maternal infection; particularly, colonisation with organisms such as group B streptococcus
  • prolonged rupture of membranes
  • low birth weight
  • premature labour
