Non-goitrous hypothyroidism is caused by decreased or absent thyroid tissue and may result from:

  • chronic autoimmune thyroiditis
  • thyroidectomy or treatment with radioactive iodine
  • thyroid agenesis or lingual thyroid
  • as part of panhypopituitarism
  • hypothalamic lesion with isolated TSH deficiency
