The past history of the patient should detail:

  • obstetric history
  • relevant surgery e.g. thyroidectomy
  • radiotherapy to e.g. thyroid or gonads
  • drugs e.g. oral contraceptives
  • childhood development

A family history may be informative:

  • ask about autoimmune, endocrine or hypertensive disease
  • determine the height, weight, body habitus, hair growth and age at puberty of other family members

Take a social history:

  • alcohol and drug use must be discussed
  • occupation is significant where exposure to chemicals or drugs is possible
  • ask about diet e.g. salt, liquorice or iodine
