Lactose is a disaccharide sugar composed of glucose and galactose monosaccharide residues joined at the 1 and 4 carbon residues. Milk is the only dietary source of lactose.

A deficiency of the enzyme lactase, which cleaves lactose, can lead to a state of lactose intolerance.
